A Blog About Blogs

One of the services we offer at The High Road Agency is blogging. We have several writers on staff who focus on composing original researched pieces on a wide variety of topics (from HVAC and fencing to car repair and gardening). But sometimes, the needs of client call for something a little different.

This month, one of our clients in the tourism sector needed a first-person blog written about a family trip to a nearby city. I was selected for this project and was handed my itinerary and contacts list. So my family and I drove about an hour away to this city where we were given a personalized history tour, indulged in a delicious meal at a local eatery, perused shops and antique stores in downtown, and stared mesmerized at over 100 vintage restored autos at the cruise-in. It was a great opportunity to visit a place we hadn’t been to and enjoy a wonderful evening as a family.

Blogging can be a great way to increase engagement with your brand, drive traffic to your site, and show visitors that you are knowledgable of your industry. But you need to have a plan if you decide to add blogging to your marketing mix. Here’s a few tips:

  1. Post regularly. We recommend a minimum of 2 blogs per month. This keeps your audience coming back and makes the search engine robot gods happy.
  2. Keep your blogs short (but not too short). The standard length is 500-700 words. This is enough to provide substance without being long enough to induce eye-rolling and sighs.
  3. Use original photography or purchase stock photography. It’s very easy (and very expensive) to get caught using pirated images.
  4. Respond to your readers. When they leave a comment, make sure you show them you are reading too. But don’t be afraid to delete spam or other unhelpful comments.
  5. Utilize social media. Be sure to share your content on your social media platforms. This gives you another opportunity to drive traffic back to your website and provides another portal for you to communicate with your audience.
  6. Most importantly: PROOFREAD. Check spelling, grammar, tense, person. Make sure your blog is ready to be published before you click “Publish”. This will give you much more creditability in the blogosphere. Also, Google bots do better scanning and indexing real words.

Even with these tips, a blog is a commitment. It’s better to have no blog than to have a blog that hasn’t been updated in 6 months or 2 years. If you need help maintaining your blog, writing original content, or even just coming up with a strategy, contact a marketing agency who can point you in the right direction.

The High Road Agency is a full-service marketing agency (including blogging services) located in East Tennessee. Our staff writers are sitting at their desks, pens in hand, ready to start writing for you. Give us a call.
